Hershey and Kaci are now angels

We are sorry to advise any of our "blogging buddies" that Hershey and Kaci are now angels in heaven.  Hershey passed away in March of 2022 and Kaci passed away in July of 2021.  However, we have a new addition to the family.  Her name is NestlĂ©.  Here is a picture of her:

We hope you enjoy the picture.  She was about eight weeks old when we got her.

Jessy is here visiting us

Hello everyone -

We are so sorry that we have been behind in blogging.  But the reason is in the title of this post. Jessy is visiting us and has been here a little over a week.  Her pawrents are in California right now.  In the meantime, Jessy and I (Hershey) are having so much fun together.  We love playing with the squeaky toys and the rope toys too.

The only thing we don't do together is walk with Mama.  She cannot walk the two of us because of the size difference.  But I do voice my displeasure when Mama takes Jessy and not me.  She does make up for it though.

We hope everyone is having a good weekend.  It is raining here.

Another trip to Fort Griswold and Mama did a good deed for a neighbor

Hi, everyone -

We hope everyone had a great Memorial Day weekend.  It was a good weekend all around for Mama and I.  Fort Griswold is now officially open and Mama climbed the monument on Memorial Day.  You know the building that looks like this:

Here is another view of the park:

The Friday before Memorial Day Mama was walking in the neighborhood.  She was almost home and a nice lady was a little upset.  She had found a dog wandering in the street and asked us if Mama knew who he belonged to.  Mama had a pretty good idea who the pup belonged to.  She was 100% certain she had seen him before on our street.  The lady and Mama went to the house and knocked on the door but no one answered.

The lady was getting a little distraught because her husband and dog are being treated for cancer at the same time.  She did not want to upset her dog or her husband because of the health issues.  Mama offered to bring the dog to her house and call the Animal Control Officer.  The lady walked with Mama to our house and I (Hershey ) met the nice lady.  I made her feel at home while Mama was helping the pup.  This dog had no ID tags or collar - only a flea collar which made Mama angry.

Mama proceeded to call the Animal Control Officer's office.  The very nice lady who answered the phone could not come out and get the dog because she was not a "field" employee.  She was the dispatcher but she offered to call the police department for Mama.  Mama did not want the dog alone on the street either so she told the lady that would be fine.  Mama was holding the dog and keeping me happy - no small task.  The dog was nervous so Mama put him on the run and let him outside to do his business.  Within 15 minutes the police officer came to the house.  Mama met him and she put the dog in the back seat of the patrol car.  The officer took him to Animal Control.  Later that night the dispatcher got a call from the owner of the dog asking if anyone had seen him.  The dog was reunited with his owner that night.

The next day the officer knocked on our door and told Mama that the dog was safely home.  The officer also has a soft spot for dogs and told Mama that he (the dog) really liked her.  The officer also rescued a dog for him and his family.  He took Mama's name and other info in case she got a reward.  All in all it was a great weekend.  Mama found out that the dog's name is Bernard.  He is part chihuahua and part "doxie" a Lorenza type dog.

Sorry our post is so long!

Springtime is finally here

Hi, everyone -

Spring has finally come to our part of New England.  It has been really chilly but now the daffodils are in full bloom.  We also have a cactus that is indoors that has a lot of blooms on it.  Mama counted about 15 of them yesterday.  The color is a lighter shade of red but the blooms are really long.

This is the main reason why we have been behind in blogging.  Jessy was here for over two weeks this time.  Her pawrents went to Germany because Mama's nephew is doing an internship through college there.  Then they finished their trip in Florida driving up in the car that belongs to my "uncle's" parents.  This is Mama's brother-in-law. Jessy went back home on Sunday.

For the most part, Jessy was really good.  She and I (Hershey) had a ton of fun playing tug of war - in fact one of the rope toys is now four smaller rope toys using the strings of the original toy.  Jessy figured out a way to completely undo the knots at both ends of the toy.  She is pretty creative when it comes to destroying toys.  She loved sleeping with Mama and would go in the cage when she was exhausted.  Mama did some testing to see how long it would take her to find hidden treats.  Depending on the trick it took Jessy a little over a minute to get the treats and eat them.  Mama also did a trick using a mirror on us - just to see what we would do.  The first time we ran away from it but the more she tried the trick the more we got used to seeing the mirror.

The not so good things that Jessy did was she took off (the first time was an hour) with Mama on her heels the whole time.  Just when Mama thought to get Hershey to bring Jessy home she found Jessy on the back steps waiting to go into the house.  Mama was pretty angry because I did help a little bit letting Jessy go out on her jaunt.  The second time took fifteen minutes.  Mama was able to get her home on the leash with the help of a neighbor that time.

We are sorry this post is so lengthy.  But Jessy had a way of occupying a lot of Mama's time plus she was taking care of me too.  And of course other things got in the way - such as life and Easter Sunday.

P.S.  Papa gave Mama her Easter card today.  He left it in the car and totally forgot.  We hope everyone had a Happy and Blessed Easter!

Jessy is visiting us again

Hi, everyone -

Jessy is visiting us this weekend.  My "aunt" had to go to a funeral.  We are having so much fun driving Mama insane.  Today Papa has the day off and we are driving him insane too.

Papa is making another wooden boat.  He is now cutting the pieces to put the boat together.  He is planning to use this boat for the "Meet at the Beach" weekend in June.

We don't have any new pictures because the digital camera needs batteries.  We hope you all are having a great weekend!

I am Dogster Dog of the Week!

Hi, everyone -

For our next post Mama was going to post some pictures of Kaci and I together.  Instead she woke up this morning to see this:

Mama logged onto Dogster and saw that I (Hershey) is the Dogster Dog of the Week.  She was really surprised and happy.  It is ironic that dogster.com is closing the community in favor of a "digital magazine format" soon.  We will really miss Dogster but Mama is planning to do more blogging and we are on another forum too.

Here are the pictures that I received from  some pup pals:

And here is the picture that Mama saw on the community page which will be there all week:

I have received so many congratulatory wishes, gifts, zealies and lovely comments today.  I guess I am the boss of this household, Mama.

I am extending my birthday celebration today

Hi everyone -

Since I got a belated birthday cake, I am extending my birthday celebration today.  The weather is crummy here.  We have several inches of snow on the ground from Sunday and yesterday and now it is raining on top of the new snow.  Yikes!  Anyway, here is the birthday cake I received from one of my Dogster pup pals:

Our first post for 2014 - fun with Jessy

Hi, everyone -

Jessy came to visit me on New Year's Day because her pawrents are in Florida on vacation.  They are down there with their daughter who is home from college.  She resumes classes on Monday so the pawrents will drive her back to school after they fly home from Florida.  They will probably want to get on another plane back to Florida with all of the cold weather we have been experiencing lately.

Jessy and I are becoming really good friends.  We like to play tug of war and now our latest thing we like to do is to take over Mama's couch especially her side of it.  We take turns - one of us will take over her side and the other will take over the rest of the couch.  We do a really good job of that.  Mama is too kind  hearted to kick us off the couch.

Now I can even take toys (especially ropes) out of Jessy's mouth.  She is really gentle with me and both Mama and Papa are impressed that we get along so well.

We do have some pictures but Mama took them from her cell phone so they may be a bit blurry.  In the meantime, here is an image of shooting stars that Mama found online.  She loves stuff  like this.

Happy New Year, everyone!

Christmas 2013

Hi, everyone -

We hope everyone had a Merry Christmas.  Kaci and I spent Christmas together in New Hampshire the weekend before Christmas.  When we left there was a a little snow on the ground.  We came back to rain - and a wet basement floor.  Mama and Papa said that we never seem to take a trip to New Hampshire unless we travel in rain.

Kaci and I had a lot of fun together.  Not only did we spend time with Grammy we also spent time with the rest of the family.  There are two cats in the family now.  Their names are Zoey and Squeakers.  Zoey was pretty friendly unless Kaci and I were a little close.  Then she would warn us by hissing.  I did really well considering I like to chase cats out of the yard.  Kaci on the other hand kept sticking her head in the cat door trying to see Zoey.

I got two frisbees and a squeaky Moose toy for Christmas.  I even got a treat from the garbage men on Christmas Eve!

Here is a Christmas picture that Mama found on line.  She really likes Peanuts:

Then Mama and Papa went to her father's house for Christmas brunch.  There was something on the menu called French toast casserole.  The ingredients are the same as if you would make regular French toast.  But you bake it instead and it looks like an Apple Betty dessert. Mama and I hope that this fulfills the report requirement, Khyra.

Additionally, we will be having a house guest.  Jessy will be visiting us again.  She will come on New Year's Day and stay until the 13th of January.

Sorry this post is a little long.

Merry Christmas everyone

Hi, everyone -

This will be a short post for today because Mama and Papa have been invited to a Christmas brunch with her family.  It should be interesting because on the menu is something called French toast casserole.  We promise we will post more later because so much has happened in the past week.  In the meantime we found a really neat video that you might enjoy:

It is not a Christmas video but it is fun to watch.  The dogs are two "sisters" - a German Shepherd and a Miniature Schnauzer.

We will be together for Thanksgiving

Guess what?  Kaci is here for Thanksgiving.  She came yesterday and we are having a lot of fun driving Mama to drink.  We have played together and tried to swipe each other's food so far.  Plans include some walking around the neighborhood but the temperature here  has been a little chilly - 14° this morning. Brrr.  We are not ready for that yet.

We apologize for not blogging earlier.  Mama was busy taking care of Jessy for about a week during the summer.  And things in general are very hectic now.

Jessy's latest visit

Hi everyone -

Jessy came to stay with us last month.  She was here for ten days and we had a lot of fun together.  But the first day Jessy decided to run around the neighborhood which made Mama really upset.  It took her a half an hour to get her back to the house.

But after that she calmed down and got used to our routine.  She loves looking out the windows in the house.  Jessy and I played a lot together too.   Here is a video of us playing together and a picture of her looking out the window:

Enjoy the video, everyone!

Jessy will be visiting us again

Hi, everyone -

Jessy is going to visiting with us again in about two weeks.  Her pawrents are going to Florida and they are driving a car back here.  We hope all of you had a Happy Easter.  Here are some pictures.  They were made for us by one of our Dogster pup pals,  Aregon Spunky and Casper.  They also started a blog which hasn't been up very long.  Here are some pictures:

In the meantime, if anyone is interested in making holistic treats for their pets here is a recipe that Mama got from a friend.  She has not tried making these yet but thought she would share the recipe with anyone who is.  Sorry for the different font.  Mama just copied and pasted this to the post.  Here is the recipe:

These basic biscuits can be customized to cater to your canine’s palette
Ingredients
• 2 ½ cups whole wheat flour (substitute regular flour or oats if your dog is sensitive to wheat)
• 1 tsp. salt (or less)
• 1 egg
• 1 tsp. Beef or chicken Bouillon granules (can substitute beef or chicken broth/stock)
• ½ cup hot water
Optional Add ins
• Bacon or chicken broth, eggs, oats, liver powder, wheat germ or the other supplements discussed, shredded cheese, bacon bits, fresh herbs, dehydrated bits of apple, banana or blueberry all unsweetened, etc.,.
Directions
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
2. Dissolve bouillon in hot water
3. Add remaining ingredients
4. Knead dough until it forms a ball (approximately 3 minutes)
5. Roll dough until ½ inch thick
6. Cut into slices or bone shapes (you can purchase a bone shaped cookie cutter to make shapes with)
7. Place dough pieces on lightly greased cookie sheet
8. Cook for 30 minutes but check mid-way through as my oven is old and times may vary!

A "wild" assortment of newer pictures

Hi, everyone -

Sorry we have been a little behind in blogging.  Things have been crazy around here lately.  Here are some of the latest things Kaci and I have done:

First of all, as some of you may know there is a new four legged member in my (Hershey's) family.  My "aunt" and "uncle" got a puppy last summer.  Her name is Jessy and she is extremely energetic.  She is not even a year old and has made life very interesting for her pawrents.

Recently, Grammy celebrated her birthday.  Mama being the tactful person she is does not want to disclose her age.  She will only say that Grammy is in her mid 80's.

The last and really wild thing happened in my back yard.  During a recent snowstorm in February (which was  not a fun one because we had both rain and snow) one of the trees in our next door neighbor's yard uprooted itself and landed partially on the roof of the back of their house.  Papa decided to move our car further back in the driveway because he was pretty nervous about that tree.  It's a good thing he did because our car could have been wiped out in our own driveway.  Anyway, here are some pictures:

The first is Jessy playing with her treat toy, the second is her in the hallway of our house being nosey.  The next two are of the tree in our neighbor's yard.  The last three are of Jessy.  The first two were from her first visit and the last three are from her second visit.  The first is the lesser "devil version" of her and I on the couch.  The second and third are her posing "innocently" in our kitchen.

Sorry we don't have any pictures of Grammy's birthday party.  The humans went out to eat for her birthday while Kaci and I were home.  Enjoy the pictures, everyone.

Jessy is visiting us for a few days

Hi everyone -

Jessy's parents went away for Valentine's Day and she is staying with us again.  She has gotten a lot better but she has way too much energy for me (Hershey).  It is hard to be the more mature dog in this scenario.  In the meantime, here is a photo of Jessy and I.  Mama says that we both look possessed.  Here is the photo.  If this photo is a little blurry we apologize.  This was taken from Papa's cell phone.

Have a good weekend, everyone.

Today is my birthday

Hi everyone -

Today is my birthday.  I am seven years old.  So far my birthday has been great - I got a bag of treats and a huge treat from the recycling crew.  I also got a monkey toy that squeaks.  I love toys that squeak.  A lot of my pup pals from Dogster have given me treats and I am also honored in the Princess Divas and Prince Charmings group as the Royal Member of the Day.  This is the plaque that was made in my honor:

We also have a new member in our family.  My "aunt" and "uncle" have a new puppy.  Her name is Jessy and she stayed with us for a week last month.  She is a big puppy - part labrador retriever, part german haired pointer and there is possibly some English Setter too.  She looks mostly like a labrador.  We have some pictures that we need to download to the computer.  When that is done, we will post some of them.
